Villa Description

The main villa on the estate, Villa Trappola, was built in 1283 as a tower 30 metres high to defend the coastline from marauding Saracens.

The tower is surrounded by a landscaped garden, planted in the summer of 2005 after the extensive restoration of the villa was completed. Care was taken to plant large shrubs and trees so that the garden looks as though it had always been there. The owners of the estate live in a house adjacent to the villa.

All that remains of the tower today are the lower ramparts which give the building an arcane aspect of strength and solidity. Villa Trappola extends over three floors. A large, modern kitchen with adjoining dining room and TV lounge occupy the ground floor. The first floor is made up of a large living space and two bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. The top floor has another three bedrooms and three bathrooms. A second kitchen here conveniently serves as a breakfast kitchen.

The extensive restoration of the house included the new kitchen and bathrooms, while the other rooms in the house received a complete face-lift. The decor is elegant and comfortable in harmony with the patrician style of this historic residence.

The garden extends over an extensive lawn shaded by maritime pines for al fresco dining and a pool area (children-proof) .

The beach is at 4 km from the house at the end of a country lane winding through the National Park, affording fascinating glimpses of the local fauna. The sandy beach is white and deep, with the islands of the archipelago on the horizon. It is rare here to meet your Man Friday; there are few parts of Tuscany so secluded and well preserved.

Additional Information

The olive trees on the Trappola estate are a rare species of wild olives, locally known as olivastri. A morning can be pleasantly spent touring the Trappola lands in a horse carriage culminating in a lunch served under these biblical olivastri.

A delightful walk from Torre Trappola leads to the ruins of the church of San Rabano within the borders of the National Park .

The Maremma National Park extends over 10.000 hectares along the coast. The Park has many signposted tracks affording views of herds of the lyre-horned cattle of the Maremma still rounded up by the local cowboys known as "butteri" and the indigenous horses of Maremma in the wild.

Siena: at one hour's drive from Torre Trappola, this is one of the most enchanting towns in Tuscany fanning out around a shell-shaped main square called Il Campo where the historic horse race known as Il Palio is held twice a year. The narrow streets are lined with old-fashioned boutiques and little cafes, while the churches and museums are a treasure trove of fourteenth century art.

Trendy beach resorts: you will find the jet-set holiday resorts of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole at only a 45minutes drive from the Trappola estate. A visit to the daily fish market in the picturesque harbor of Castiglione della Pescaia featuring the day's catch straight from the fishing boats is highly recommended. (30 minutes from Trappola)

The WWF Maremma National Park: The Park encompasses seven towers, the remains of an abbey and twenty six grottoes. In summer the National Park can only be visited accompanied by a guide. Visits by night from 8 to 11 pm are a special thrill.

The islands: boats leave daily for the islands of Giglio and Giannutri from the nearby fishing village of Castiglione della Pescaia. Giglio is a charming unspoiled island with a village dominated by a castle dating back to the time of the Aragons and many secluded bays and creeks. Giannutri is not unlike some of the less exploited Greek islands and is a favorite haunt of deep sea divers as they say a sunken Roman galleon is buried in its depths.

The spa of Saturnia: Saturnia, an hour's drive away, is the most spectacular natural hot water spring and spa in Tuscany with a luxury spa hotel as well as pale blue waterfalls of hot water cascading down the hillside in the open countryside.

The beach

A deserted beach lies only 4 kms from the house and can only be accessed on a private country lane.

You may drive to the beach by car, yet it is also a wonderful opportunity for a bike ride or a walk, as one is able to view fascinating wild life along the way.

On the beach you will find shade under a large sail, which can be fixed onto four poles.

The white fine sand is wonderful for taking long walks, the water is clean and warm enough to swim in from mid-May to October.

Guided Tours on the Estate

The estate of Torre Trappola lies within the boundaries of the WWF National parc "Parco dell'Uccellina". The owner of Torre Trappola can organise guided trips, exploring the estate on horses or in a carriage. It is necessary to book in advance. Tour on horses (max 5 - 6 people) for 3 hours at ~€60/person. Tour in a horse drawn carriage (for 9 people) for 3 hours at ~€160. On this tour you are able to see various animals such as horses, cows, fallow deer, wild boars and foxes. You have the opportunity to view birds of the region at small artificial lakes and the swampland. Tours always vary a little (depending on the season and the number of people).
